Applications for Laser Therapy
We often recommend laser therapy to pets recovering from trauma or suffering from certain health conditions. This treatment is also beneficial for aging pets whose mobility is declining.
Laser therapy may be used to treat:
- Post-surgery pain
- Dental procedures
- Ear infections
- General pain management
- Fractures, burns, bites, and other wounds
- Arthritis, degenerative joint disease, or hip dysplasia
Many of our laser therapy patients are older animals who are suffering from musculoskeletal conditions. Since our pets can’t talk to us and express the pain or discomfort they are in, you’ll have to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms that your pet is suffering.
Your pet may be a good candidate for laser therapy if they exhibit:
- Abnormal sitting or lying posture
- A limp
- Licking or biting a certain area
- Trembling
- Restlessness
- Trouble going up and down stairs
- Lack of appetite
- Whining or groaning, especially when moving, sitting down, or standing up
How Does Laser Therapy Work?
Laser therapy harnesses the power of non-thermal photons to stimulate cell regeneration, increase blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the healing process. The series of chemical reactions that occur as a result of laser therapy is known as photobiostimulation.
What to Expect from a Laser Therapy Session
When you bring your pet in for laser therapy at Rhawnhurst Animal Hospital, we make sure your pet is relaxed and comfortable. Your pet will not need to be sedated, anesthetized, or shaved. Most pets who seem anxious before the treatment usually experience almost immediate pain relief, which helps them relax.
The treatment process is simple: a veterinarian or technician on our team will hold the laser wand over the affected area while your pet is laying down or standing up. A single session usually lasts anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Many pets seem more comfortable and in less pain after just a single session, but we may recommend one or multiple sessions per week for a period of time.
